3 Types of Logos and How to Use Them Effectively

2. Letter Marks

A letter mark is a logo constructed solely out of letters, usually the initials of a company or organization. They are intended to be very simple and to help complex company names have better recall like abbreviations, similar to how Dolce & Gabbana is also known as DG.

Because of their simplicity, they can be very versatile and can be used in various contexts and on multiple platforms. It is essential to use clean, simple lines and shapes for this, and color combinations should be kept to a minimum.

3. Pictorial Marks

Pictorial marks are logos that feature a symbol, image, or shape associated with a company. They should be vivid, eye-catching, and easily understood without much thought through association.

Nike’s swoosh and McDonald’s golden arches logos are some examples of this type of logo. The Target logo, which is essentially a circle logo design, is also an example of this. Companies with a clear visual identity can benefit most from using Pictorial Marks.
